Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing that the Pāṇḍava-s were coming, the citizens of Vāraṇāvata were delighted and swiftly came out in thousands, in various conveyances.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यह सुनकर कि पांडव आ रहे हैं, वारणावत के नागरिक प्रसन्न हुए और विभिन्न वाहनों में हजारों की संख्या में तेजी से बाहर आए।
In order to receive those best of men, they carried with them auspicious gifts, as laid down in the śāstra-s.

Coming to Kuntī's sons, the citizens of Vāraṇāvata reverently sur rounded them in a circle and uttered the blessed word "Jayā".

इस प्रकार उनसे घिरे हुए, मनुष्यों में बाघ, धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर, हाथ में वज्र लिए हुए, देवताओं से घिरे हुए लग रहे थे।
Welcomed by the citizens and paying homage to them in return, those unblemished ones entered Vāraṇāvata, populated and decorated for the festival.

O protector of the earth! Entering the city, the warriors first went to the houses of the Brāhmana-s engaged in their duties.
हे पृथ्वी के रक्षक! शहर में प्रवेश करते हुए, योद्धा सबसे पहले अपने कर्तव्यों में लगे ब्राह्मणों के घरों में गए।

They then went to the houses of the city officials and next to the houses of those with chariots. Next they went to the houses of the Vaiśya-s and even to the houses of the Śūdra-s.
फिर वे नगर के हाकिमों के घरों और रथवालों के घरों के पास गए। इसके बाद वे वैश्यों के घरों में और यहाँ तक कि शूद्रों के घरों में भी गये।
The citizens paid homage to the Pāṇḍava-s, bulls among men. Next, with Purocana leading the way, they went to their house.

When they had lived there for ten nights, Purocana told them about a house that was blessed, though it was actually unblessed.

Inspecting the house, Yudhiṣṭhira, supreme among those who know all the dharma, told Bhīmasena,

The evil Purocana has used trusted and well-skilled artisans to build a house with straw, bark and cane, sprinkled all over with ghee.

O Pārtha! This is the danger that the immensely intelligent Vidūra foresaw and warned me about earlier.
हे पार्थ! यह वह ख़तरा है जिसके बारे में परम बुद्धिमान विदुर ने पहले ही भांप लिया था और मुझे इसके बारे में आगाह कर दिया था।
But now that he has told us, we know this house to be full of danger, constructed by skilled artisans under Duryodhana's control."
लेकिन अब जब उसने हमें बताया है, तो हम जानते हैं कि दुर्योधन के नियंत्रण में कुशल कारीगरों द्वारा बनाया गया यह घर खतरे से भरा है।"
Bhīmasena said: "If you think this house is inflammable, then let us go back to our earlier house."
भीमसेन ने कहा: "यदि आपको लगता है कि यह घर ज्वलनशील है, तो आइए हम अपने पहले वाले घर में वापस चलें।"
Yudhiṣṭhira said: "I think we should live here as if we are keen and suspect nothing and thus doomed to be destroyed. But we must find a certain way of escaping.

अपि चेह प्रदग्धेषु भीष्मोऽस्मासु पितामहः कोपं कुर्यात्किमर्थं वा कौरवान्कोपयेत सः धर्म इत्येव कुप्येत तथान्ये कुरुपुंगवाः
The question remains whether grandfather Bhīṣma will be angry if we are burnt alive. Will he anger the Kaurava-s by displaying his anger to them? It may be that if we are burnt, grandfather Bhīṣma and other bulls of the Kuru lineage may be angry for the sake of dharma.
प्रश्न यह है कि क्या हमें जीवित जलाये जाने पर भीष्म पितामह क्रोधित होंगे? क्या वह कौरवों पर अपना क्रोध प्रदर्शित करके उन्हें क्रोधित करेगा? हो सकता है कि यदि हमें जलाया गया तो पितामह भीष्म और कुरु वंश के अन्य बैल धर्म के लिए क्रोधित हो सकते हैं।

वयं तु यदि दाहस्य बिभ्यतः प्रद्रवेम हि स्पशैर्नो घातयेत्सार्वान्राज्यलुब्धः सुयोधनः
But if we flee from this place, scared of being burnt, Suyodhana, avaricious for the kingdom, may kill us through assassins.
परंतु यदि हम जलाए जाने के भय से इस स्थान से भागेंगे तो राज्य का लालची सुयोधन हमें हत्यारों द्वारा मार डालेगा।
The evil Suyodhana has position, we have none. He has allies, we have none. He has a large treasury, we have no riches. There is no doubt that he can kill us through diverse means.
दुष्ट सुयोधन के पास पद है, हमारे पास कोई नहीं। उसके पास सहयोगी हैं, हमारे पास कोई नहीं है। उसके पास बहुत बड़ा खजाना है, हमारे पास कोई धन नहीं है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि वह विभिन्न तरीकों से हमें मार सकता है।
Deceiving this evil one and that evil one, Suyodhana, let us live here for some time, hiding where we go.
इस दुष्ट और उस दुष्ट को धोखा देकर, सुयोधन, हमें कुछ समय के लिए यहीं छिपकर रहने दो, जहां हम जाते हैं।

ते वयं मृगयाशीलाश्चराम वसुधामिमाम् तथा नो विदिता मार्गा भविष्यन्ति पलायताम्
Let us roam the earth the way hunters do, so that we become aware of all the routes that exist for escape.
आइए हम शिकारियों की तरह पृथ्वी पर घूमें, ताकि हम बचने के लिए मौजूद सभी मार्गों से अवगत हो सकें।
We will now secretly dig a hidden tunnel in the ground. If we can keep that a secret, the fire will not be able to destroy us.
अब हम गुप्त रूप से जमीन में एक छिपी हुई सुरंग खोदेंगे। यदि हम उसे गुप्त रख सकें तो अग्नि हमें नष्ट नहीं कर सकेगी।
Let us live here in a way that neither Purocana nor the inhabitants of the city know what we are doing."
आइए हम यहां इस तरह से रहें कि न तो पुरोकाना और न ही शहर के निवासियों को पता चले कि हम क्या कर रहे हैं।"
